Rhythmic continuous forms

Ernst Kurth · 2022

The very fact that a bodily sense of motion impacts the psychic energetic [sense] is of psychological interest, because one must first question in which way it impacts. The sudden onset of a rhythmic percussive accent is also most often softened in reality, in that the upbeat of the melody leads to it, be it in intensification or in the shape of some other mediating formation, etc. The historical changes are also connected with the profound differences, which enter vis-à-vis the rich and much less definable accentual shading of the free curvilinear dynamics. There was always music for marching and dancing and the inclination toward symmetries in song-type movements whose origin also points back to the dance song. In the classical period this also coincides not accidentally with the conversion to an artistic expression that emphasizes the subjective-personal.
