Integrating SEL and ELA Using Literary Texts

This chapter will illustrate how to integrate SEL and the teaching of English Language Arts standards using literary picture books. The chapter begins by explaining the rationale for this integration, and then it provides specific examples of connections between the SEL competencies and ELA standards. Picture book exemplars are used to demonstrate integration with each of the five CASEL SEL competencies (self-management, self-awareness, social awareness, responsible decision-making, and relationship skills). The chapter concludes with a sample lesson plan using a literary text.
