Camera Setup and Operation

David Stump · 2021

Digital cinematography cameras can be confusing in their expressions of exposure time. Most film cameras employ a shutter that is basically half a circle. Film cameras have almost always employed a physical shutter to prevent light from exposing the film during the period while an unexposed frame of film is being shuttled into the aperture. In some applications, temporal resolution may be equated to the sampling period, or its inverse, the refresh rate, or the update frequency in Hertz, of a sensor or camera or display. Manipulating the color and contrast of images on set using on board camera controls should only be attempted after much deliberation and testing. Some cameras almost never require black balance, some require infrequent black balance, and some cameras should be black balanced frequently. Gamma adjustment in digital cameras and in color correction is used to modify the non-linear manner in which humans perceive light.
