Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) Attack is often referred as Distributed Network attack. The impact of an effective DDoS attack depends on the targeted company and the business sector to which it belongs. In general, online businesses, Internet of things involving smart device connecting to the internet, and critical infrastructures are targeted by the cyber attackers using DDoS. Whenever there is a successful DDoS attack, the targeted company has to suffer financial as well as reputational losses. This study is aimed at developing a cyber risk model to estimate the risk and impact of a successful DDoS attack for online businesses and performed the Monte Carlo simulations to predict future uncertainties in terms of happening about successful DDoS attacks based on the conditional probabilities associated with various attack patterns. The results of the study will be of significance for various stakeholders, particularly public sector, private sector businesses and insurance companies who want to insure various types of online businesses.
