This chapter explores the ubiquitous comma-separated value (csv) data format and the use of the readr package to import them. As csv does not contain metadata, this chapter&s;s focus is the conversion of variables to appropriate data types and an exploration of the concept of coercion in R programming. The process of checking and converting variables between data types is extended to the conversion of multiple variables to numeric types. The imported dataset is used to illustrate some processes for assessing missing values. The chapter concludes with an exploration of the method for saving data in the native R format Rdata .
