Program Explication
Etta R. Hollins, Connor K. Warner · 2021
Program explication is a process for examining or developing the contours of the knowledge base for teaching and teacher preparation during program renewal or program development. The contours of the knowledge base are generated from an understanding of the best available knowledge in the field, conditions and needs in schools and communities, and state and national standards and requirements. This approach ensures that the contours of the knowledge base are consistent with the conceptual and structural elements of the teacher preparation program. The initial representation of the knowledge base is in brief descriptions of courses or modules and related clinical experiences. In program renewal, this process can involve revising, reorganizing, or replacing courses and creating new courses. Essential tools used in facilitating the program explication process include a program explication document, basic knowledge base framework, source documents for program authorization and approval, and a program approval process schedule. The preliminary knowledge base developed during the program explication process is elaborated in the course alignment process described in the next chapter.
