In this article we would like to show how 5G mobile networks could be suitable for supporting transportation functions as bearer infrastructure. Some basic functions for supporting transportation are already implemented in 2G mobile networks – mostly in GSM-R used by the railway network systems – but in the near future new demands will emerge. Fifth generation mobile network standards contain these kinds of capabilities, but the implementation is not automatic and obvious. Support of transportation in modern mobile networks (self-driving cars, drones, etc.) is only possible if several certain quality characteristics (Key Performance Indicators) are met.
