Intra prediction in high efficiency video coding (HEVC) uses a variety of complex tools, which effectively improves the coding performance, but leads to a significant increase in computational complexity. To tackle this issue, we present a complexity reduction scheme for coding unit (CU) size decision. In this paper, we first analyze the correlation between the texture and the non-texture costs for the current coded CU depth. Based on the coding information of the temporal neighboring frame, an early termination scheme is proposed to skip the unnecessary candidate hierarchy levels required to be evaluated in the exhaustive way. Experimental results show that the proposed method can reduce by 42.09% in coding time on average, while the encoding efficiency only loses 0.76% of the BD-Rate increment, compared to the full rate-distortion search in RM16.7.
