Visions of the Pre-Criminal Student: Reimagining School Digital Surveillance
Andrew Hope · Policy Press eBooks · 2021
In examining the links between pre-crime and schools this chapter will initially focus on the notion of pre-crime, before exploring the digital surveillance technologies used in schools and considering whether they are, or might be, involved in pre-crime processes. Having ascertained that despite growing technological capacities contemporary school surveillance technologies are not currently involved in such analytics the focus will shift to a consideration of neoliberal governmentalities in order to suggest that there exist commercial pressures for student data to be used in this way. The notion of the pre-criminal student will then be considered. In conclusion, it is ascertained that connections exist between pre-crime processes and digital school surveillance technologies, not in terms of current school practices, but rather with reference to the potentialities and the socio-economic conditions necessary for such applications to occur.
