Special Structures

Andrew Rushton · 2011

This chapter discusses a few important hardware structures. It focuses these special structures that have been collected together. There are two aspects to the modelling of tristate systems in very-high speed integrated circuits programme (VHSIC) hardware description language (VHDL). One covers the modelling of tristate drivers. The other is the modelling of tristate buses. The chapter also discusses the finite state machines (FSMs). These are often used to implement controllers. It presents a variety of templates that provides Moore machines, Mealy machines and FSMs with either combinational or registered outputs. The chapter also focuses on memories, which can be implemented as register banks or converted into RAMs using RAM inference. It describes the number of different templates that allow different types of RAM to be inferred. Finally, the chapter describes the decoders, which can be converted into ROMs using ROM inference. Controlled Vocabulary Terms codecs; controllers; finite automata; finite state machines; hardware description languages; random-access storage; very high speed integrated circuits
