When an airborne early warning radar is detecting air targets, ground targets, especially freeway targets often can be detected and accordingly become interference plots and tracks. Hence, air and ground target classification must be performed to enhance track quality of air targets. In this paper, a new air and ground target classification method is proposed based on Doppler information of targets. First, the Doppler features of freeway target echo are analyzed on the condition of multi-channel clutter and space-time adaptive processing (STAP) based on traffic flow simulation. Then, an air and ground target classification rule is proposed according to the Doppler distribution difference in frequency domain. The simulation results show that both higher recognition probability of air targets and that of air target can be acquired simultaneously in the classification rule.
