Quality of Service and High Availability

Saida Helali · 2020

This chapter discusses the functional elements of a network that are necessary for good Quality of Service (QoS), and how they can be implemented with current technologies. QoS is principally aimed at remedying problems of network congestion or saturation, which cause latencies and data loss. It also enables the optimal support of multimedia applications, which are based on the principle of real time. QoS is a key factor for managing multimedia applications and for the success of the Internet protocol as a basic unifying protocol for next-generation convergent networks. High availability represents all of the methods and means that contribute to ensuring that an IT infrastructure always provides the planned functionalities and services. Redundancy, backup, data replication and load distribution help to ensure high availability of the IT system. The chapter discusses redundancy in the physical layer, data link layer, network layer, and application layer.
