Design of Network Infrastructures

Saida Helali · 2020

The design of IT networks constitutes a vital stage in the implementation of an IT infrastructure. Networks are bound by certain norms and specifications depending on their architecture, geographical coverage, transmission speed and the nature of the information transmitted. Depending on the type of information exchanged and the nature of the equipment involved, networks are differentiated as telephone networks, broadcasting networks, and digital data networks. This chapter discusses the classification of digital data networks and describes the hardware and software parts of a digital data network. It explains the three main indicators for judging the performance of a network: output, latency and packet loss. The chapter discusses the concepts of collision domain/broadcast domain and virtual local area networks (VLANs). Network design varies depending on the size and needs of a company. In general, a good network design is based on the five principles of structured engineering: hierarchy, modularity, resilience, flexibility, and security.
