Horseshoe Pattern

Abstract When applying multidimensional scaling to data that has an inherent one‐dimensional structure, for example, in a chronological study, the two‐dimensional scaling solution may often arrange the points in a ‘horseshoe’ shape, which is a consequence of the ‘blurring’ of the larger distances.
