Telecommunications Technology

Mark Norris · 2001

Standardisation and commoditisation are key aspects in the design and deployment of modern networks. This implies that you have to understand the key components that are being supplied. Some of these components are virtually universal. For instance, SONET/SDH provides virtually all of bulk transmission, C7 handles all of the inter-networking signalling. Other components are more differentiated, such as those on offer for managing networks. Nonetheless, almost all of the technology that is used in telecommunications conforms to some generally accepted pattern. This chapter builds on the previous one by illustrating how some of the key concepts of telecommunications systems translate into components that can be used to construct them.
