Chapter 6 considers multirate filter banks. They form the discrete-time variant of time-frequency transforms. The chapter gives an introduction to the field and provides an overview of filter design methods. The topics covered include decimation and interpolation, polyphase decomposition, perfect reconstruction two-channel filter banks, quadrature mirror filters, lattice and lifting structures, tree-structured filter banks, uniform M-channel filter banks, DFT and cosine modulated filter banks, lapped orthogonal transforms, subband coding of images, and transmultiplexers.
