Fair Coexistence of LAA and WiFi in Multi-Carrier LBT based on Joint Throughput and Airtime Fairness

LAA-LBT is a sensing-based access mechanism for spectrum sharing which allows the harmonious coexistence of LTE with incumbents such as WiFi in the unlicensed band. The contention window size for random backoff for LBT procedure plays a significant role in determining the throughput, airtime and fair allocation of resources between stations contending on multiple channels. This paper focuses on fair allocation of resources based on joint fairness of throughput and airtime between LAA and WiFi over multiple channels. This study employs a method of coupled Markov Chains models between LAA and WiFi, and the results show that a dynamic contention window size assignment based on joint fairness achieves higher total throughput than equal contention window size assignments.
