A method of embedding data to printed images and retrieving the data using a mobile device has been proposed. This method assumes that images are placed on a flat surface. However, to increase the flexibility of the method, it is desirable to acquire data from an image placed on a curved surface. In this paper, we propose a method of extracting data from a data-embedded image placed on a cylinder surface as an example of a curved surface. We develop a method of correcting the captured image by estimating the distance between the mobile device and the image placed on a curved surface, given the radius of the cylinder, the size of the printed embedded image, and the focal length of the mobile device. The experimental result for an image attached to a cylinder shows the effectiveness of the proposed method.
