ABB's isolated parallel ring bus (IPRB) architecture with static uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) provides a solution with excellent scalability, power sharing, and fault handling capability. Critical components in a data center power distribution system are modeled for system simulations. In the modeling approach, a balance is struck between computation speed and fidelity such that useful system simulation results can be obtained for use in planning, design, and protection. The UPS model includes low short circuit current fault modes. The dual-corded load (DCL), used widely in data centers is modeled with DC link control. Transformers and chokes are modeled with saturation characteristics. Various fault scenarios have been analysed and presented. Verified system simulations in the SIMULINK modeling environment are used for fault studies to obtain protection design requirements. It is shown that system simulations with the appropriate fidelity are very useful to explore system issues and protection. Modeling the components' fault mode behaviour is critical to obtain useful results.
