Wargaming has a long history and is applied to a broad range of problems at different levels of command. This chapter addresses wargaming as applied in planning of operations as outlined in planning and decision-making processes. It describes the characteristics of wargaming in operations planning, the opportunities and benefits simulation support could potentially provide and how these characteristics transfer into simulation user needs and requirements, to bring added value to the wargaming. The aim of wargaming can either be to improve decision-making in real situations or educate and train people to make better decisions in simulated situations, i.e. for discovery or for learning. Manual wargaming restricts the number of course of action (COAs) that can be considered due to the time needed for wargaming each COA. The simulation-supported wargaming for analysis of plans system is a proof-of-concept demonstrator of decision support systems for COA wargaming that incorporates functionality to assist planning in the land domain.
