Awareness of an Adaptive E-learning Agent: Exploring Effects on User Experience
Ye Kim · 2021
The evolution of adaptive Artificial Intelligence (AI) agents within e-learning platforms continues to be pervasive, but little is known about how user awareness of the system can effect perception or behaviour. This thesis puts forth the notion that awareness of an AI agent system within an e-learning system can affect learning outcomes.Using a flashcard-based website with an adaptive AI agent, participants were placed in either an unaware Control group or a Test group who were aware of how the AI agent worked.Participants were tested on their Spanish understanding before and after using the website, as well as other factors. The results from my quantitative analysis did not find any significant differences in learning outcomes between groups.Through usability interviews, Test group participants demonstrated self-learning techniques more than the Control group.x A number of people helped me in completing this thesis, and I could not have done it without them.A huge thank you to my supervisor David Thue for taking me on, for his patience and support throughout my Masters, and for making me the researcher I am today.Thank you to Jinay Shah for the laughs and friendly competition. And of course, thanks to my parents Jae-Hyo Park and Jong-Hyun
