Coexistence Standards in IEEE 802
Daniel Chew, Andrew L. Adams, Jason Uher · 2021
This chapter provides an overview of various coexistence standards and identifies important coexistence mechanisms within them. Wireless coexistence standards for operation in TV White Space need to provide deference to the TV broadcasters. Industry groups that organize to develop standards for operations in different bands often coordinate with independent standards bodies, such as the IEEE. The chapter covers standards intended for small Personal Area Networks and very large Regional Area Networks. IEEE 802.22-2019 rolled up the enhancements in the prior amendments and expanded the scope of 802.22 from TV white space to opportunistic spectrum access in multiple bands. There are three Blind sensing techniques discussed in the 802.22 standard: energy detection, Eigenvalue sensing, and multi-resolution sensing. The wireless protocol used for the “Wi-Fi” Wireless Local Area Network is defined by the IEEE 802.11 standard. The IEEE 802.19.1 standard assumes the unlicensed devices are capable of geolocation.
