Geophone ground coupling

Christine Elizabeth Krohn · The Leading Edge · 1985

Geophysicists often ascribe the cause of poor data quality to geophone ground coupling. To accurately record ground motions for a seismic survey, the geophones must be coupled firmly to the ground. Certainly, the geophone hanging in a bush or loosely placed in a crack will not accurately record ground motions. Even though the well-planted geophone can follow ground motions at lower frequencies, it may fail at higher frequencies. Generally, coupling is not a problem for conventional recording in favorable terrain, but it is a crucial factor in high resolution and shear wave recordings.
