CyberScams
Ralph Spencer Poore · Information Systems Security · 1999
When the famous bank robber John Dillinger was asked why he robbed banks, he replied “because that's where the money is!” In the age of electronic commerce, computer crime happens for that same reason. Information security professionals need to understand these schemes and to educate others about them. But the range of cyberscams includes some profoundly nontechnical crimes for which all should be on their guard. Here the author shares some of his favorite cyberscam stories. Some are embarrassingly low-tech. Others rely on technology. After each one, he provides a simple procedure that, had it been followed, might have foiled the villains.
