Network and service monitoring involves methods and tools that make it possible to observe everything that happens in the network and to manage its components in the event of problems, locally or remotely, in order to restore functionality. This chapter discusses the main concepts of network and service supervision. Monitoring is a process that affects various levels of an IT infrastructure. It is classified as network monitoring, system monitoring, and application monitoring. The simple network management protocol (SNMP) is currently the most widely used network management protocol. It is used by most of the monitoring applications currently on the market. Windows management instrumentation is used to monitor and manage Windows system resource. The chapter introduces two of the leading paid monitoring software programs: HP OpenView and IBM Tivoli. It also discusses free monitoring solutions, including Nagios, Centreon, Shinken, Zabbix, and EyesOfNetwork.
