Two Degrees of Freedom (2DOF) electrical machines are widely used in robotics and manufacturing lines. Their performance, reliability and robustness heavily depend on the sensors required for close loop drives. Using a 2DOF position sensor instead of two individual ones in these applications reduce the number of parts and significantly improve the overall sensor reliability. In this paper, two new integrated configurations are proposed for robust linear-rotational position sensors. In the proposed sensors, one of the stator or rotor cores is divided into two parts, one with only vertical slots and the next with only horizontal slots. While the other core has both vertical and horizontal slots all around the core. The performance of the developed resolvers, so-called half-stator or half-rotor resolvers, is evaluated using three-dimensional (3-D) time stepping finite element method (TSFEM) and their position error are compared.
