Force and Torque

Scott D. Sudhoff · 2021

This chapter focuses on the prediction of electromagnetic force and torque. An energy-based approach to the calculation of force and torque is set forth. If we can derive an expression for the amount of energy stored, the calculation of the force or torque will be straightforward. The chapter considers the energy stored by an electromechanical device. It focuses on evaluating the equation for the energy in the coupling field when the system flux linkage equations are of the form wherein current is a function of flux linkage and position. The field energy represents energy stored in a lossless and therefore conservative field. The chapter also considers the more common case where flux linkage is expressed as a function of current and position. It discusses the co-energy, which is closely related to the field energy.
