Video compression, from the early days of digital video, has been necessary for efficiently transmitting the large amount of raw captured data. Throughout the years, many video compression standards, mainly under the umbrella of the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG), have been introduced, ranging from H.264 to the latest VVC standard. Recently, an alliance of technical companies promoted an open, royalty-free compression scheme, known as AV1. This paper examines the compression performance of three codecs, namely the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), Versatile Video Coding (VVC), and AOMedia Video 1 (AV1), in an effort to quantify which one may be the ultimate solution for efficiently transmitting/streaming the next generation video content. Performance of each codec is measured by objective video quality metrics using 4K and 8K high dynamic range (HDR) video sequences. Performance evaluations showed that VVC outperformed the two existing encoders for both resolutions, clearly making it the preferred choice for transmitting the emerging 4K and 8K resolution, high dynamic range video content.
