Networks are made up of hardware and software. The hardware component consists of physical devices, while the software component consists of programs that run on the hardware. Successful business requires the correct combination of hardware, software, and a speedy network. While many types of networks exist, there are two main categories: Local Area Network and Wide Area Network. This chapter briefly introduces information technology network systems, details the different kinds of networks, and addresses network devices and their roles.
