AI as a Tutor

Carmel Kent, Benedict du Boulay · 2021

This chapter explains how AI can tutor new ideas and how to do new things. We use the word ‘tutor’ rather than the word ‘teacher’ because the focus is on one-to-one interactions, and teaching involves other activities too, such as classroom management. In many ways, the classic use of AI has been the building of artificial tutors aimed at teaching skills and concepts. The very phrase ‘intelligent tutoring systems’ has come to be synonymous with AIED, although originally it referred to a particular AI-based tutoring style. This style involved one-to-one tutoring a problem-solving skill, such as programming, by monitoring the learner step by step and intervening with help and advice immediately that the learner seemed to be veering off a good path to a solution.
