IoT, IoE and Tactile Internet

Wrya Muhammad Ali Monnet · 2021

This chapter reviews the types of Internet of Things (IoT) and shows the existing architectures. Then, it reviews the interaction models between IoT, Internet of Everything (IoE) and Tactile Internet (TI). Machine-to-Machine converges towards IoT in terms of the communication network, by connecting distant automated teller machines, security cameras and wind-farms. The chapter provides the comparison by analyzing the IoT functioning, components and architectures. Cyber-Physical systems (CPS) contribute to security, efficiency and comfort in contrast to IoT systems' monitoring and simple actuation tasks. As such, the TI can be considered as a special case of CPS. The fundamental network infrastructure, as the name IoT suggests, is based on the IP protocol. The chapter provides a detailed presentation of IoT communication protocols for each of the available IoT communication protocols. The mobile-edge computing and Fog architecture can be more adapted to IoT applications.
