The concept of overlay networking is not new and has been around for close to two decades. Overlay networking abstracts traditional networking functions from the physical network fabric and performs them in software. This is achieved by encapsulating the data packet with an additional header. Technologies such as Virtual Extensible VLAN (VXLAN), Network Virtualization using Generic Routing Encapsulation (NVGRE), Stateless Transport Tunnelling (STT), and GENEVE were introduced to combat the limitations of traditional network and VLAN limitations.
