A Practical Example of Data Converzion

Charles Banyay · Auerbach Publications eBooks · 2021

This chapter deals with the various forms of the conversion of data. It focuses on examining the following: different types of conversion efforts that one encounters during systems implementation projects, the taxonomy of the conversion effort, and common pitfalls that can have rather detrimental effects on the overall effort if one is not aware of them and does not take the necessary precautions before hand. One of the most common pitfalls of conversions is to combine into one conversion effort a change of too many variables, e.g., changing hardware, operating system(s), file access method(s), and application software all at once. The data requirements of the new application drive the conversion design. Record-keeping applications on the other hand, such as document management systems and pension administration systems need to retain almost all of the information within the current database.
