Signal Time-Delay Tolerance in Teleoperated Vehicles

E. Nakamura · 2021 IEEE 10th Global Conference on Consumer Electronics (GCCE) · 2021

Two kinds of simulations have been conducted using a driving simulator to find how much degrees of signal latencies can be tolerated when a vehicle at a distant location is teleoperated by a human driver via wireless networks in its real world use. Signal latencies ranging from 100 ms up to 400 ms were introduced on purpose by developing an add-on software module that can delay signals generated in the visual process of the simulator. It has been found that latencies of 200 ms through 400 ms cannot be handled in lane trace runs at constant speeds while even 100 ms latency cannot be tolerated in double lane change runs.
