Traditional DAS Technologies

Daniel Minoli, Jo‐Anne Dressendofer · 2021

This chapter covers cellular technology at a very basic level, with particular emphasis on Distributed Antenna Systems (DASs). A DAS can be configured to support a variety of services, including cellular communications services, Wireless Local Area Networks services, Personal Area Networks services, radio frequency identification and Bluetooth beacon tracking services, Location-Based Services, and generic Internet of Things sensor support services. Cellular systems make extensive use of "frequency reuse". Frequency-division Duplexing is designed so that the transmitter and receiver operate using different carrier frequencies. Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) facilitated new approaches to use spectrum in the 3.5 GHz band in the United States by introducing a new regulatory framework for spectrum sharing. The CBRS band will be utilized both for mobile and fixed access. There is a practical preference for using fiber-optic systems to connect a baseband unit and remote radio unit elements, rather than other connectivity arrangements.
