An FPGA-based Ethernet Switch

Christian Johansson · 2021 29th Telecommunications Forum (TELFOR) · 2021

The need for high data rates in communication is commonly resolved by implementing the physical layer of Ethernet. Its wide acceptance is due to the high bandwidth and the ability to support heterogeneous traffic. The linking of the connected devices is achieved by adding a switch that relays the data between the devices. The switch is, therefore, necessary to provide both configurability and performance, which are critical for its function and the system in total. The demonstrated implementation of a switch realized in an FPGA shows the feasibility of providing a high degree of configurability together with high bandwidth. The functionality of the switch also presents a viable solution to use time-critical and best-effort traffic in the same network.
