Data Access Using Microsoft Visual Basic 5.0+

Stephen D’Silva · Auerbach Publications eBooks · 2021

Data in many organizations resides in databases such as Microsoft Access, Microsoft SQL Server, Sybase SQL Server, Oracle, DB2, Informix, and Ingres. This chapter provides methods and techniques that are available to the Visual Basic developer to access data residing in these databases. Remote Data Objects (RDO) support is available from the Visual Basic 5.0 Enterprise development version. To use RDO in Visual Basic the application first must have a reference to the RDO object library, which currently is Microsoft Remote Data Object 2.0. The chapter describes some of the objects within RDO. ActiveX Data Objects (ADO) represents the future of data access methods and is a fundamental component of Universal Data Access. Universal Data Access is an evolutionary step from today’s standard interfaces, including Open Database Connectivity, RDO, and DAO, and extends the functionality of these well-known and tested technologies.
