Event operations: upstream design

William J. O'Toole · 2021

This chapter concerns the ultimate product of all strategies and the management: the event itself. The operations of the event are the attendee’s main experience. The site, the logistics and the programme are the areas of concern. Any problem in event operations can more often than not be traced back to management decisions made long before the start of the event. By learning from experienced event staff, the event team can test the operational feasibility before the day of the event. Some tools will assist the event team to discuss and test the operational feasibility, such as the mud map. There are a number of stories from the frontline of events which, when combined with the case studies on the accompanying website, will give the reader a real world view of event operations. Finally, a method and template to create the event feasibility study are outlined.
