Top-Level Synsets in the RuWordNet Thesaurus

This paper describes one verification method for RuWordNet, the Russian language thesaurus (lexical ontology). Top-level synonymic sets, i.e., synonymic sets for which there are not hypernyms, are considered. It is shown that many of them do not represent generic terms and, therefore, the RuWordNet structure must be more specific. 5 general strategies are described for introducing new synonymic sets and/or semantic relations to fill the gaps detected. The strategies are based on an analysis of the structure of phrases and use information from dictionaries. This paper has also specifically exemplified how to implement the strategies.
