Apache and HTTP/2 in the Cloud: A Comparative Study of Apache Architecture in AWS

Jacob Koch, Wei Hao · 2021 IEEE 12th Annual Information Technology, Electronics and Mobile Communication Conference (IEMCON) · 2021

Web servers are an important part of website architecture. High performance is a must when attempting to provide superior content distribution. Edge computing is a model that attempts to attain high availability by attempting to put the content closer to the user, also known as the edge of the network. While putting the content closer to the user increases performance, the way the content is delivered can affect the performance just as much. HTTP/2 intends to improve upon much of the slow overhead experienced with HTTP/1.1. HTTP/2 also attempts to secure the communication, as often HTTPS is enabled with HTTP/2. HTTP/2 also allows the web server administrator to push content likely to be requested next or in the future by users increasing performance. In the following paper we will explore the performance of several apache-based architectures versus a coinciding model paired with AWS CloudFront and HTTP/2. The goal of this research being to ascertain the superior model when it comes to content distribution.
