Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are vulnerable to traffic analysis attacks. In asset monitoring WSNs, adversaries may focus on analyzing the network traffic to obtain critical information such as the location information of the source nodes and thereafter capture the asset. Therefore, it is important to provide source location privacy (SLP) protection in safety-critical monitoring WSNs. In this study, we investigate the performance of fake packet-based SLP routing protocols under varied sensor node residual energy. Experiment results reveal that for different routing algorithms, it is possible to achieve improved levels of SLP protection and long-term SLP reliability when the residual energy of the sensor nodes is maintained at higher levels than a threshold energy value.
