Heuristic Evaluations and Critical Analysis Walkthroughs

Walkthroughs involve a researcher or a usability expert navigating through a website or an app—exploring menus, reading through content, clicking buttons, etc.—with the goal of evaluating it. Walkthroughs in UX include heuristic evaluations, where an expert reviewer does a holistic inspection of a website or an app using predetermined criteria or heuristics. The output of a heuristic evaluation is a list of usability issues. Walkthroughs in academia can also be done as a type of critical analysis by the researcher, evaluating the app to uncover certain assumptions that the app is based on, and pointing out the limitations for users resulting from these assumptions.
