Relational database management systems (RDBMSs) are complex in their architecture and management of data, and different RDBMS tools follow different architectures to manage their data. Therefore, there is a strong need of a common programming query language for accessing these RDBMS tools. Structured query language (SQL) is a high-level language used for handling data in a database. It is a standard language, and mostly all RDBMSs follow a common syntax. It follows ANSI standard. It is used to create, manipulate, and manage the data in database tables. It provides ease of access to a database. SQL is also categorized into data definition language, data manipulation language, data control language, and transaction control language as per the functionality performed on the database. SQL has also provided many built-in functions to be performed on a stored database as per the user’s need. These functions can be categorized as aggregate functions, mathematical functions, string functions, date functions, etc. It also provides some clauses that are used in query and subquery to get the result from a database in a required manner. In this chapter, a detailed description of SQL is provided with various categories and functions.
