It is of great interest to develop an optimal testing procedure of a newly developed software. We propose a Bayesian model and investigate the structures of the optimal decision policy for scheduling a testing procedure. The decision policy is optimal in the sense that it minimizes the total cost incurred by the testing activity and the errors made by the imperfect software. Our results help to determine the optimal testing interval, the optimal number of testings, the expected minimum testing cost and the optimal release time of the software. Our results also apply to the maintenance phase of the software life-cycle. Thus our results help to determine the optimal time interval for error correction and the time when it is no longer cost-effective to correct the detected errors.
