In this study, we have used GRAPE-II (Graphical Rapid Prototyping Environment) to design a prototype of an adaptive beamformer. The adaptive beamformer is to be used with an antenna array in GSM base stations, for Spatial Division Multiple Access (SDMA). Key Words Adaptive Beamforming, Spatial Filtering, Rapid Prototyping, SDMA, GSM 1. Introduction The adaptive beamformer has the function of estimating the signal of a particular user in the presence of other user signals, noise, reflections, and interfering signals using the same frequency channel. Utilization of this spatial filtering in GSM base stations can improve the quality of the received signals or can allow for multiple users in the same frequency-time slot, which is the idea of SDMA. To verify the real time performance of such a beamformer, we worked out a prototype. As high technology products are getting more complicated, reducing design time and effort is becoming the key factor for both time-to-market and designer's p...
