Ray Tracing and Irregularities of Distribution
Don P. Mitchell · 2000
Good sampling patterns for ray tracing have been proposed, based on the theories of statistical sampling or signal processing. It is assumed that such patterns will be more efficient, but in what sense? For some classes of image functions, the theory of irregular-ities of distribution proves that N-point sampling patterns exist which can estimate pixel values asymptotically better than the O(N − 1/2) of random sampling. Experiments with known sampling patterns from graphics suggests that some already have superior conver-gence properties. 1.
