Volumetric error compensation through a Siemenscontroller

Andrew Peter Longstaff, Simon Fletcher, Alan Myers · Huddersfield Research Portal (University of Huddersfield) · 2005

Volumetric performance is becoming the parameter by which machine tool accuracy is evaluated. It is no longer sufficient to produce a machine which is capable of linear accuracy along a single measurement line - it must be capable of accurate point-to-point positioning throughout the working envelope. Volumetric compensation has become an industry-accepted method of enhancing the performance of a machine by adjusting each axis position demand according to the total error calculated in that direction. New work at the University of Huddersfield has taken mature compensation technology and applied it through the open architecture Siemens 840D controller. This paper discusses the application of the compensation routines through a specially written compile-cycle extension to the NC kernel. Volumetric measurement methods are discussed and compensation results are presented which show a 97% improvement in volumetric performance.
