Underground Distributed Antenna Systems For Wireless Communications

Michael W. Fitzmaurice, Mirosław Wyrzykowski · 2009

Many transit agencies have implemented distributed antenna systems (DAS) in their existing underground tunnels so as to provide a means of reliable radio communications with subway trains and deployed personnel. In some transit agencies these systems are still being planned or are being renewed and expanded as transit agencies seek to use the latest technology to lower operating costs, improve safety and provide new customer services through cellular and/or WiFi access. Design, installation/expansion of such systems is quite complex and challenging. This paper will explore the various aspects associated with the design, installation, testing and maintenance of DAS in an underground environment as well as discuss the important issue of how to best manage the expectations of users of these systems. Lastly, this paper will discuss strategies for how to best specify an underground DAS so as to ensure project success.
