On Fuzzy Sets and the Management of Uncertainty in an Intelligent Geographic Information System
Vincent Β. Robinson · Studies in fuzziness and soft computing · 2000
The Knowledge Based Land Information Manager and Simulator (KBLIMS) is used as the basis for providing a perspective on using fuzzy sets as the basis for managing certain kinds of uncertainty in a geographic information system. A brief perspective is presented on the implications for the classification of landscape data, object model, and query model of the system. Portions of the system may exploit the rich research of fuzzy sets to address very specific problems such as model self-evaluation and control. Addressing the issue of representation and management of uncertainty at both the landscape analysis and query level leads to a process of formalizing and managing uncertainty that cascades through the system warranting changes at the object model level subsequently forcing substantial additions to the knowledge base.
