Abstract : The report covers the development of the BBN speech project over the last four years from its early beginnings as part of the natural language understanding research at BBN prior to the inception of the ARPA Speech Understanding Project. At this point, the project is in the middle of the 5- year program projected by the ARPA Speech Understanding Research Steering Committee. This report is a final report on the first phase of this project and marks the transition of the Speech Project from a part of a larger contract on Natural Communications with Computers to a separate contract of its own.
